Why I Write About Humanity, Secularism and Human Rights

As a blogger and freethinker, I return to one question in my writing. How can people with different beliefs live together with equal dignity?

My answer begins with freedom of conscience. Every person should have the freedom to believe, doubt, ask questions and change their mind. That freedom must extend to religious believers, people who follow minority traditions and people who hold no religious belief.

I support secularism because I believe public institutions should treat these people equally. A person’s access to justice, education, employment or protection should never depend on their religion.

Human rights also require attention to material hardship. Freedom means little to someone who cannot obtain food, education or a safe place to live. Writing about humanity therefore means listening to deprived communities and asking whose suffering is being overlooked.

Religious extremism concerns me because it can turn disagreement into intimidation and violence. Criticism should address particular ideas, actions and institutions carefully. Holding an entire community responsible for the actions of extremists only creates further injustice.

Through Beja Shohor Blog, I want to encourage thoughtful discussion about these issues. I believe arguments should be answered through evidence and debate, and that peaceful expression deserves protection even when it causes disagreement.

My commitment is to a society where people can speak honestly, live safely and receive equal treatment. That commitment connects my writing on secularism with my concern for humanity.
